There has been an article in the New York Times and on Daybreak this morning about the 24 stone New York City councilman Leroy Comrie who wants to use his overweight body as proof of why McDonald’s Happy meals should be banned.

He stated that he enjoyed fast foods but each meal that comes with a toy should be under 500 calories and have added restrictions on salt and fat.

He did say, which we think was quite good “We are not trying to hurt anyone’s bottom line. We are trying to help people’s bottoms.”

When you ask a lot of children what do you get from Mcdonalds’ they ususally say a toy’ – great marketing ploy but not good for the future health of our children- they even have a full web site for the kids – McWorld.

On researching this we find that there are websites where you can collect Mcdonald Toys from past years.

What do you think? Should they be banned completely or have certian restrictions?

Columbia University following research stated that when people are sleep deprived they eat more calories and more fat compared to when they have had plenty of sleep.

Doctors have had the understanding for quite some time that there is a connection between lack of sleep and weight gain. It appears that there is a growing body of evidence that indicates that sleep is an important factor in maintaining a healthy weight.

It is believed to be caused by a disruption in hormone processes which control metabolism and hunger cues. This study, however, is one of the first to examine actual food consumption as it relates to the number of hours a person has slept.

The researchers included 26 men and women of normal weight in their study. Half of the group were allowed to sleep for 4 hours per night for a total of 6 nights while the others slept 9 hours each night. For the first four nights the subjects were given a controlled diet. For the last two they were given the freedom to eat whatever they wanted.

‘You can eat an extra cheeseburger a day’ – say diet experts!
This was the headline used in the Daily Mail on Sunday to report research carried out by a committee of Britain’s leading nutritional experts on the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) that found we could eat an extra 400 calories a day.

Besides the fact that the headline is totally misleading, to compare the extra calorie intake to a cheeseburger is totally irresponsible, as if we don’t have enough to think about when it comes to our health do we then get told that we can eat extra calories in the form of junk food!

I am pretty sure that the scientific results did not say, ‘you can consume a cheeseburger everyday with no worries of what it might do to your body’, instead the research revealed that with consideration of the amount of exercise done by an individual a day then it may be possible to consume an extra 400 calories. These calories do not allow people to be irresponsible with the food they consume nor should they be taken light heartedly. Food consumption should be based on listening to your body’s hunger signals and reflect your daily activity, they are not saying you can allow yourself a cheeseburger, they are saying that extra calories can be consumed through sensible eating.

In my opinion a healthy consumption of food is not reliant on calories – calories act as a guide but can be construed that as long as we do not consume more than our daily limit then it doesn’t matter what we eat – which is not correct, if we ate burgers three times a day but stayed within our calorific limit then that could be interpreted as ‘healthy’ – and this is why there is so much confusion. It seems the papers enjoy making it harder for society!
