A 24-year-long US study has offered the strongest evidence yet to show a diet rich in vegetables, low in animal protein and moderate intake of dairy products cuts chances of heart attack in middle-aged women by almost a quarter.
The study, which followed over 88,000 females aged between 30-59, found that those who followed the diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and plant-based protein had a 24% less chance of suffering from a heart attack and 18% less likely to have a stroke than women who consume more meat.
The study’s leader Teresa Fung said: “People might think they don’t have high blood pressure, so they don’t have to follow it. However, the results suggest that even healthy people should get on it.”
