The long and short of love

Do men find tall women unattractive?

Tall women are totally fine and perfectly attractive, said the men of the office yesterday; consider the long and leggy form of any Victoria’s Secret Model for instance.

Oh really? I probed.

Well… not always, I guess, came the reply.

Seems that should a bloke face a decision between a strapping Amazon woman and a petite pocket rocket, chances are the little lass will take out the title of Most Alluring – particularly if said Amazon stands above the man making the call.

This clarifying point adds clout to the argument that suggests the modern Australian man is intimidated by a taller lassie and would therefore be less likely to pursue romance.

Surely our boys have more balls than that?

Perhaps I’m being unsympathetic to the masculine mores of Aussie Joe (who according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics measures 178cm on average, a mere two centimetres taller than yours truly WITHOUT heels…)

And, as a tall woman, I feel compelled to make reference to my own experience of what some like to refer to as Reverse Heightism.

Were I to slap on a pair of my treasured, 10cm high heels and head out for a glam gals night on the town, it would be fair to assume this CityKat would stand a good head taller than most men she meets.

And most men she meets would see it as a cause for concern.

Few are willing to vault the height difference, many can’t help but make reference to the fact and some seem confident enough to carry on a conversation without any regard for the height disparity.

However, in many cases, the aforementioned confidence of these men morphs into cockiness, soon making it apparent that they were more concerned with over-compensating for their diminutive stature (Hallo short-man syndrome?!) than engaging in a fun bit of flirtation.

So kudos to the brave few, for whom height is not an issue.

Yet if we tall women were to be perfectly honest, I am sure it would become apparent that vague shades of height discrimination exist within our ranks; I’ll admit for my part that a broader, taller man remains the more physically attractive body type (my social engineering is apparently still subject to the lauded gender norms).

And while I in no way imagine that a superficial consideration such as height would stand in the way of true, true love – I wonder how many opportunities for a wonderful relationship are cast asunder for the sake of a few centimetres?

So what says you, Ckat crew? Tall birds; hot or not? Does it swing both ways?

Give me the long and short of it!
