The Illusionists: Body Image and the Potent Mass Media

Today, I came across The Illusionists, which is due to be a documentary about women and self image and how we are marketed to with unattainable beauty – and with what effect this is having. At the moment it is a working progress but the website offers a full overview of what it sets out to explore.
This project is voicing the concerns of women worldwide, and something which is long overdue in coming.
“The beauty industry, mass media and advertising are filling the airwaves and public spaces with images of idealized female beauty, injecting women with a deep sense of insecurity regarding their physical appearance. While insecurity is extremely profitable for many industries, the inordinate stress on idealized female beauty ultimately produces different pressures and social expectations in women and men.”
We should all get behind projects like this – it is going to take a lot for the beauty and fashion industry to change the way they portray the body, this is the exact reason why we started our petition; Real Bodies Unite. Please support this project by following them on Twitter and visiting the website, and please share your thoughts on how you feel with regard to this below.
