New Look charge more for Plus Sizes
An article by Sarah
Posted July 16, 2009 As we have seen other stores succumb to altering the way they charge for their clothes, the most recent being Marks and Spencer for its larger charge on bigger bra sizes. We now see another ‘sizest’ clothing store charging more for its plus size collection.
New Look Jeans in its Hula boot-cut plus-sized range cost £12, rather than a regular £10. The store said although it usually absorbs the extra costs involved in bigger fashions, it occasionally had to pass on to customers some of the increased costs.
It echoes Marks & Spencer, which last month admitted it was wrong for charging £2 more on bras sized DD.
New Look customer, Annee McBride, from Glasgow, discovered the extra cost for the range, sizes 18-26, when shopping at a branch in the city centre recently.
“I think it is awful, a clear case of discrimination.”
Mrs McBride, a 37-year-old mother of two, said: “I examined both pairs of trousers and both looked identical in every way – the only difference I could see was the price.
Mrs McBride, an office administrator, said: “You have to consider that the average size of a woman in the country is 16-18.
“There are more larger women looking for fashions and they should not be expected to pay a penalty charge because they need larger clothes.
“My concern is that this is going to set a trend and that other stores will think it is fair to charge more for bigger sizes. You don’t get a discount if you are a size four or six, so why should you pay more if you are an 18?”
Last month M&S had argued bigger bras needed more work to develop greater support and therefore the extra cost was justified. But campaigners said the prices discriminated against well-endowed women, pointing out that other items of clothing were the same price regardless of size. I wonder if New Look will do the same and admit that they too ‘have boobed.’
