Hopping Mad: Frog Slime to Cure Diabetes!

Can frogs hold the key to the cure for diabetes?New research has found that a secretion from under the skin of the South American paradoxical frog can stimulate the release of insulin- the essential hormone used to treat Type II diabetes sufferers.

The bright green and pink paradoxical frog takes this name because it shrinks rather than grows as it gets older. As a tadpole, it can reach 27cm (10in) in length but adult frogs are only about 4cm (1.5in) long and usually found in Trinidad and the Amazon Basin.

Type II Diabetes has been closely linked with obesity, so the new research comes as a ray of hope to those who have been diagnosed with the disease. Douglas Smallwood from Diabetes UK has said “’Good diabetes control reduces the risk of complications including blindness, heart disease, kidney problems and amputation so new treatments are vital”.

Dr Yasser Abdel-Wahab, from the University of Ulster, said: ‘We have found that pseudin-2 has the potential for development into a compound for the treatment of Type II diabetes. Now we need to take this a step further and put our work into practice to try and help diabetes sufferers.’
