Britain Gets First Glossy Magazine For Curvy Women

Just As Beautiful has become the first British glossy lifestyle magazine aimed at curvy and plus-size women to go into print.

Despite the average size of women in Britain being a size 14-16, there is very little representation offered to this curvier market in terms of fashion, beauty and editorial coverage.

Surprisingly, the plus-size market has continued to expand despite the recession, and with top designers and fashion icons such as Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian and Beth Ditto all launching plus-size fashion ranges, the options for the curvy women are rapidly expanding.

Sue Thomason ‑ who has spent almost two decades as a staff journalist on women’s titles, such as Woman and NOW ‑ is the Editor of Just As Beautiful Magazine. “If you’re a woman over size 14, you’re likely to be stuck for something to read that doesn’t make you feel like you’re too big or ‘wrong’ because you’re not a size zero.

“We want our readers to know that they don’t need to change their appearance to ‘fit in’ or be truly happy. Most people only think they need to change because they’re constantly exposed to the message that they do – and shown images of impossibly skinny models that they’re told they ‘should’ look like,” she says.

The magazine, which began three years ago as a free digital publication (distributed via email on a subscription-only basis), became an online hit, amassing thousands of subscribers and supporters alike.

Just As Beautiful is an unusually intelligent and entertaining read, with advanced and forward-thinking advice about body image, self esteem, health and a unique take on exercise.

“Going on a diet is a predictor for weight gain. The diet industry is the most successful failed business in the world ‑ only about 2% of dieters lose weight and keep it off, while 98% generally don’t. Which other industry would see this rate of failure as a success?” says Sue.

Actress Christina Hendricks ‑ who was recently named the most beautiful woman in the world ‑ has been quoted as saying: “I am curvy. This is the way I’m built and I like it. I’ve always had hips and boobs.”
