Following our post about Younger and Younger children having eating disorders this morning on Lorraine Dr Hilary discussed how images affect our population.
Individuals often aspire to be like the ‘stars’ and people in the media and by seeing some visual images of skinny women have a bad affect on their self esteem.
Apparently research has found that the brain is changed by these and often cause eating disorders
He stated that women have a part of the brain that lights up when seeing images whereas it does not affect men in the same way.
Even skinny women look in the mirror and see something they are not and then they compete with the images in the media – he did say it turns into a ‘competition’
So we must all get together to stop having the pictures of skinny models on the TV and in the magazines.
Lorraine has just run a competition to find a curvy model of size 12 and over, however over 50% of the popluation are size 16 and over!
