Carmakoma is the fantastic international plus size clothing brand that comes from the minds of two very passionate women. They are passionate about providing beautiful clothing with an edge to plus size women all over the world! Here I get the privilege of speaking with one of the designers, Heidie, take a look at what she had to say.
Your collection is stunning, where does your inspiration come from?
Thanks, I actually think that this fall/winter collection is the best we have done so far. And that feeling is the best ever.
The inspiration comes from many places. We are very aware of what is going on on the catwalks and what trends are created by people in the streets. That is why we travel a lot to catch up with the vibes from cities like London, New York, Barcelona. And of course Copenhagen is also very inspiring. Music is also a very important source. I use a lot of time listening to music, finding new tracks and watching music videos.
What made you decide to set up your business and how did carmakoma begin?
Angelica & I first met at a design school in Denmark, and we became friends very fast – this is now 12 years ago.
Every summer we spent our vacation together in Spain. And we were always talking about creating a brand together. We had so many ideas – the idea which came to us again and again was the idea of carmakoma.
With inspiration from our friends, family and customers who were often complaining about not being able to get trendy and cool clothing fitting their size – we decided to create a brand with attitude, a cool image and offering plus size girls fashionable, trendy and cool collections.
We wanted to make collections and styles inspired by the catwalks and our personal taste – a concept that would make the “standard” size girls and women jealous.
Have you always worked in fashion?
Both Angelica & I have always been in the fashion business. After finishing design school both of us worked for famous Danish brands.
We love this business and find it very inspiring. Things go very fast – demanding you to always be updated.
Where does your passion come from?
We both have a huge passion for carmakoma and fashion. And all the wonderful comments we get from our customers make us believe that we are doing something right. Our curiosity about different personalities is definitely a drive. And personally, we always want to develop. We strive for carmakoma to reflect that. I really hope that people see our passion about carmakoma.
Your Autumn/winter collection in particular, when did you begin to design this?
We start developing our collections 6 months before the collections are available in our shop.
We want to be as close to the season as possible to be able to offer our customers the perfect fashionable collections at the right time.
Have you considered going world wide with your designs and setting up shops?
Already now, we sell carmakoma items world wide. We have customers from all over the world. USA, Australia, Spain etc.
What is your future dream for your business?
We want carmakoma to be the favourite brand for curvy girls and women all over the world.
How hard is it to find plus-size models to promote your fashion range?
When we are looking for models we look for an edge. We want our models to be beautiful, but not in the classical way. We want them to be inspiring to our customers. In Denmark it is actually very difficult to find curvy models, because the model agencies do not have curvy girls. So we have actually been doing our own competitions and castings to find our beautiful and wonderful models.
