So… you want to be a Plus-Size model

Okay… so you’ve always fancied a little piece of the limelight? You love having your photograph taken and your passion for fashion and style goes way beyond that of any normal woman… yes?

Becoming a plus-size model isn’t a whole world apart from regular modelling. Clients require their models to match certain criteria as you would expect.

The criteria for plus size modelling ranges from a size 16-20 for print, 16-20 for catwalk fashion shows and size 16-24 for fit modelling.

As with regular modeling a height of at least 5ft 8″ is expected.

The biggest mistake people make with plus-size modeling is they think it won’t matter if you’re fat. Obviously body shapes differ, however being plus-size and being unhealthy differ immensely. Clients expect plus-size models to have a toned and healthy body shape.

Think you fit these criteria? Other qualities a plus size model must posess are:

An upbeat and likeable personality

The correct proportions and look for the job in hand (e.g. You may be plus size, but if you’ve only got a size B bra cup you won’t be modelling underwear for bigger busted women!)

Flexibility to adjust to different locations, shoots and agendas.

Punctuality, be on time! In fact be early!

To become a model of any kind you must have a few simple photographs to show potential clients; a sort of mini portfolio. These must include:

Headshots and,

Full-body shots.

Being a plus-size model means clients want to see your curves! So don’t think you can get away with only sending in your headshots.

Regards to the industry, we spoke with Kathy at DK Model Managment, who are one of the top modelling acengies in Yorkshire. She said

“Their is more publicity about it nowadays, and some plus size models have become very well known… there will continue to be a dmand for plus size models, given the fact that there are more fashion companies now who produce fashions specifically for plus size.”
