TV personality, Tionna Smalls, is known to be a curvy woman. The world was introduced to her in April of 2010 when she co-starred with Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas in the hit VH1 show, “What Chilli Wants.” After being fed up with not being able to find fabulous clothes to accentuate her womanly frame, she called her sister Antonia “Toni” Reason. Reason, being known for her sense of style and Smalls conversed on the telephone about what the plus size industry was missing and exchanged ideas; it was then that “Majesty’s Closet” was created.

Majesty’s Closet named after Reason’s daughter and Smalls’ niece Majesty, is the answer for plus size women everywhere wondering where can they find trendy clothing in their size. Majesty’s Closet is an online women’s boutique that specializes in fabulous contemporary clothing for sizes 12-28. The sisters replaced the phrase plus size, instead they use ‘majestic’ size.

The company’s colours are purple and gold which stands for the way the company plan on treating their customers, as “Royalty”. The motto of the company is ‘we dress better than our size 4 friends!” The motto was created to dispel the misconceptions that a voluptuous woman couldn’t able to dress better than a woman of traditional size.Majesty’s Closet is by far not the average online boutique; the company will open a showroom later on in the year. The showroom which will open in Richmond, Virginia, is for customers who would like to receive the attention they deserve when they get dressed and step out. The Majestic Diva’s will be able to get one on one fashion consultations and be able to try on merchandise once the showroom is open to the public.

The website, www.majestyscloset.com, will be launched on March 31, 2012 which is also the 28th wedding anniversary of the owners parents. The sisters are hoping that the launch date will bring on many blessings.

“Majesty’s Closet is an online boutique for the majestic size woman sizes 12-28. Our motto is “We dress better than our size 4 friends.” We specialize in fab items for the everyday diva and for those who are looking to put some kick in their wardrobes….”

We wish them well in their venture

If autumn was all about bold bright colours, spring and summer will see the introduction of soft sorbet shades – think fresh mint green and Neapolitan ice cream! This is a really accessible trend and it’s easy to mix in a few pastel colours or to go all out sugary sweet, depending on your mood. Don’t worry about clashing colours and don’t be afraid to mix in your winter brights during the transition between seasons. If you like experimenting with your wardrobe, try teaming a bright top with pale bottoms of the same colour for a super chic look.

I had an email from this young woman and wanted to share it with you as I believe she speaks such a lot of sense ……

“I suppose I’d better introduce myself. I’m Victoria, Tori to my friends. I’m 33 5.9 tall with skewball proportions (short legs long torso) and depending on retailer I run between a UK size 28 to 32 . I’m a plus fashion blogger in the UK. http://fiercefatandfashionable.blogspot.com I’ve only been going a couple of months and the reason I started my blog was I couldn’t find any other blogger here in the UK thats above a size 24.

I’m the girl who was tormented mercilessly by my peers who left me threatening suicide at the age of 11. The bullying left me with a severe Binge Eating Disorder that I’m now working through. I’m the girl who stood in all of the back rows of her school photo’s. I towered above my classmates height and weight wise. I was a geek I loved to read. I could never get good clothes at that time (pre internet) I was a uk size 20 (US 18) when I left school. It was so bad I couldnt get a dress for my prom and ended up wearing trousers. I cried my heart out and begged my mum not to make me go. I never saw anyoneone who looked even remotely like me in magazines and I stopped reading them I wish I could go back in time and talk to my teenage self and tell her that there is light at then end of the tunnel.

Binge Eating Disorder is the third ugly sister of the eating disorders but you NEVER see any press about it. American statistics say it’s the most common eating disorder affecting around 5% of the population and upto 50% if not more of those who seek surgical intervention for their weight have it. The doctor platitudes of eat less and exercise more don’t work when you have this demon in your head. What starts of as comfort eating spirals beyond all control. When I was referred to my local area’s eating disorder service I was the FIRST EVER FAT PERSON they had treated. With what I have learned so far in my treatment I can now recognise that when I did diet plans like weightwatchers etc I was still bingeing but just on free foods. It sucks that the only weightloss plan that incorporates counselling is lighterlife and very low calorie liquid replacment diets can trigger gallstones and worse.

I spent most of my teens and early twenties in head to toe black – I was emo before anyone else lol. I knew nothing about fit, design or how empowering clothes makeup and hairdo’s could be. I then met a very special man when I was 23 who adored me for me and not the 350lbs I weighed. He bought me matching lingerie sets and gradually worked at getting me out of the black tents I wore the first dress I had in over 10 years when I was with him.we were together for 2 years and broke up due to external factors but because of him I am the person I am.

I then had a crazy couple of years after we broke up. Heartbreak, an awful job with horrendous hours next to no r+r and I hit the diet pills (BIG MISTAKE) and I got down to about 225 lbs. I was a MESS awful skin severe gyne problems you name it. So I jumped I quit my job with nothing to go to but I needed to for the sake of my sanity and health.

I got another job but it was total change I was now office based and I was surrounded by younger slimmer girls and I started to panic, but I told myself to hang on and I hit the internet. I found sassy funky workwear, decent glasses and I started to develop my interest in fashion and size politics. I’m now back at the 350lb mark but I know how to work it. That has evolved up to this day and is now why I set up my blog.

I am surrounded by many friends who have had weight loss surgery and while the majority have lost weight within 5 years a lot of them have put some if not all of it back on because the reasons they put on the weight are still there. My friends suffer with things like malapsorption they all have to take pills and supplements because (and this is a very emotive way of putting it) they have had a stomach amputation.

I am not promoting obesity – this term seems to get thrown at any size positive article. I certianly would not tell anyone to have a problem with food in the way that I do. But I am here I have a right to exist is it fair and reasonable that I get abused by name calling? There was a case a couple of years ago where a fat woman was attacked on a train for no other reason than her size.

I went to an event run by models of diversity in November. If you scroll down the page you’ll see a picture of 3 large ladies – me and my friends Anna and Maria. Now go to the bottom of the page and view all the comments that Models of Obesity should go to the gp’s for gastric bypass and so on I was upset but now I can’t be bothered. The feel the Mail has the most bipolar approach on weight and size politics. Search on their website for the word obesity they have more articles on weight related rubbish than any other paper.

We have to have more diversity on the catwalk and in magazines. 1 in 4 British women now have the unfortunate tag of obese. We need to be promoting a Health At Every Size (HAES) message. Diets do not work they have a 95% failure rate. We need to start loving ourselves and for me anyway fashion is a MAJOR part of that. Clothes can help you feel confident.

And I’ll leave you with this little nugget of wisdom- A great figure or physique is nice, but it’s self-confidence that makes someone really sexy.”

Love the article and what you say makes so much sense Tori.

Do you agree with her – if so why not tell us your story???

An article in The Times of India talks about how to recognise a good weight programme

With the war on obesity, the search for weight loss methods is at an all time high, be it novel diets, exercise regimens or weight loss supplements.

Nowadays, people are obsessed with dieting and willing to do whatever it takes to shed their flab. All kinds of weight loss diets based on half baked non-scientific theories that hit the trial approach are gaining popularity. The number of diets and diet claims are continuing to grow and are almost impossible to keep pace with.

Fad diets advocate arbitrary exaggerated theories of weight loss and encourage consumers to follow unbalanced diets. They are a short term, quick fix approach to weight loss. Several feed the fantasy of consumers and are planned on favourite foods which are actually junk foods. These diets tend to over-promise results but fail to deliver. In many, food choices are monotonous and calorie intake restricted leading to wearing-off the motivation to continue. All these can lead to poor health with consequences ranging to mild ones like headaches, nausea, dizziness, hair-fall to as serious as immunity related diseases, hormonal imbalances and gallstones, if followed for long spells of time.

After trying and failing to keep weight off through such fad diets or powders or pills, many give up, become victims of depression or re-invent theories and diets to rid themselves of fat. Whether the reasons for dieting are cosmetic or health related, slimming need not involve fad diets or peculiar eating patterns. Weight loss is a journey and there are no miracles.

Diets will work when they are designed for nutrition, based on scientific principles, customized for long-term and emphasize on behavior modification through counseling. Adopting principles of healthy eating and mindful eating are all that it takes to keep those extra pounds off.

How to spot FAD Diets or scam weight loss programmes

If they claim or imply a large or quick weight loss of more than 1 to 2 pounds per week.

Promote magical and miracle foods.

Restrict drastically or eliminate certain foods, recommend certain foods in large quantities, insist on eating specific food combinations, or offer rigid inflexible menus.

If they imply that weight can be lost and maintained without exercise and other lifestyle changes.

Their rationale is inconsistent and without accepted scientific belief.

They rely heavily on undocumented literature- case histories, testimonials, and anecdotes but hav little scientific research to back claims.

Contradict most trusted health professionals, or make promises that sound too good to be true. Involve deception, misinformation or significant danger.

Do not allow you to eat with friends and family comfortably.

Prescribe a uniform diet for all without taking into account individual needs.

Difficult to maintain throughout life.

Principles of a good weight loss programme

It should be derived from scientific principles of weight loss and encourage healthy eating practices – whole grains, pulses, fresh fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy and essential fats.

Variety, moderation and balance.

Should not eliminate any major food group and allow favorite foods from time to time.

Encourage other healthy life style habits like exercise, weight training, stress management and behaviour modification.

Address the nutrition needs and not simply calories.

Prescribed by qualified health professionals.

Should not contradict or violate traditional wisdom and cultural food practices drastically.

It should be customized to meet individual needs and life styles that can be followed for life.

Finally, it should help you maintain a steady weight loss of no more than two to four kgs.

A guest post sent to us today by Chelsea Smith discusses the fact that “Obesity is not a mental disease”.

Although certain mental illnesses, such as depression, can be linked to being overweight or obese, simply being obese is not a mental illness, as stated by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Diseases. This year’s revisions have been currently approved and the motion to add obesity as a mental illness will not be included.

Dr. B. Timothy Walsh of the American Psychiatric Association cited that there was simply not enough information to jump to that conclusion.

Although they did add new rules for binge eating, he stated that “we don’t have the data to merit anything beyond binge eating.” He also said that he would consider adding overeating syndrome in the future if studies and data showed enough basis for it.

However, there is some connection with mental health and eating disorders.

As stated by Dr Ayra Sharma patients with mental health issues can also experience weight issues. He further cited that certain medications associated with mental health can actually lead to weight gain. He also stresses that there be a distinct difference between those who gain with in conjunction with mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, addictions, anxiety, or post traumatic stress disorder and those who gain weight as part of a life filled with stress, social pressures, and other similar factors.

Chelsea Smith is a psychiatry student who writes for How to Become a Psychiatrist, which helps others on the path to becoming a mental health professional.

I think that maybe what she experienced during the last twelve months has made her realise that there is more to life that work. Having experienced a life threatening illness myself it does make you sit up and rethink what is important.

Simon Konecki, it appears, has been a power of strength to Adele while she was going through the throat surgery which could have put an end to her career.

Simon and Adele it apears have both been through heartache and it is good that they now seem to be happy.

Her albums have been written on the back of some very bad relationship experiences and it is said that she wants to take time off to make a home and hopefully make a happy album. I hope that being happy brings out the same standard of music as being sad has.

What a way to step back for a while, after winning 6 Grammy Awards in one go – it appears that even the Beatles won 11 in the whole of their career.

So good luck we hope you have a good rest and a happy life and in time bring us some more great music.
