Flip ‘em in a Jiffy!

istock_000004902000xsmall1-pancake.jpg‘Shrove Tuesday’ or better known as ‘Pancake Day’ is the day before Ash Wednesday – the beginning of Lent.  Lent is a time of abstinence, and a time where we ‘give-up’ certain foods; traditionally meat, fat, eggs and dairy products for 40 days and nights.  But most people give-up chocolate, alcohol, takeaways, smoking, spending money…..the list is endless!!

Back in the ‘good old days’, Shrove Tuesday was designed to use up all fat, eggs and dairy ingredients left in kitchen cupboards; as a result the tradition of pancakes began.

But do not fear for all those dieting…..pancakes are relatively low in fat and low in calories too, it’s just the toppings and the number we eat that makes all the difference!!

I’ve been searching the web to discover the best low fat toppings for you, and have come up with the most popular….

- Lemon juice and sugar
- Muller light yoghurt
- Low fat ice cream and fruit
- Stewed apple, cinnamon and raisins with low fat yoghurt or crème fraiche

Why not even check out some scrumptious low fat recipes in our Recipes section?  Take it from me……I’ve tried them and you’d never know they were low fat.  They are DELICIOUS!!
