Hampshire village inspires US campaigners

Friday, February 13th, 2009

The recession is at full swing, not only for this reason but for that of making our world a greener place; a village in Hampshire has led the way in inspiring the US to be self sufficient.

The tiny village; Martin, near Damerham, has become a shining example of how to live “the good life”, and US campaigners are now pressing America’s new president to promote healthier food.

The project in Martin was started in 2004 and aims to use community-owned land to cultivate enough produce to feed the village’s population.

Villagers raise their own chickens and pigs and grow all manner of vegetables including potatoes, garlic, onions and chillies.

The US-based campaigners, who call themselves ‘Eat The View’, want Barack Obama to plough up five acres of the White House lawn and use it to grow healthy foods for local communities.

Kermit the Frog once said…

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Kermit the frog once said; “It’s not easy being green” and I agree with him! It seems we all have to make a contribution to help our environment but sometimes making changes to our routine is difficult.

Surely it can’t be that hard? Especially when there are so many resources to help us, help the environment. Being green is such a hot topic that I thought I would do a little research myself and see how I could alter simple factors in my life to become more eco friendly.

At the moment I am provided with the council recycling bins although I appear not to have a green box and no supermarkets close to me recycle paper and cardboard…something I may need to discuss with the council, but a debate that can be had on my own time!!

Goodbye lycra, hello shovel

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

In the search for easy ways to feel great and be healthy at the same time, I came across Green Gym. I was intrigued; I am currently a member of a plainly coloured gym mainly because it’s so cold and dark when I finish work that running outside makes me want my duvet!!

Back to my discovery…Green Gym is a scheme set up by BTCV to improve our own health and the health of that which is green around us, without having to wear lycra or pay a ridiculous monthly fee! We all know that we should try to be healthier and fitter, and we are also becoming increasingly aware of the importance of our natural resources and the environment. Green Gym ticks all the boxes.

Green Gyms are country wide, led by experienced volunteers inspiring you to improve your own health through a range of practical projects that give you the opportunity to tackle physical jobs in the outdoors. The projects you get involved in will improve your strength and stamina, not only this but improve your practical skills and confidence whilst benefiting your local green spaces.
